Sonya Suares

Maria

Sonya is a multi-disciplinary actor, director, dramaturg and producer. She led acclaimed Sondheim repertory company Watch This for a decade accruing over 20 Green Room award nominations. Sonya has also been nominated for her performance in Melbourne Talam (MTC) and Cerita Anak (Polyglot Theatre). She shares a nomination for Best Direction of a Musical with Dean Drieberg for Sunday in the Park with George; and received 6 nominations/ 2 wins for Into the Woods which she co-directed with Melanie Hillman. Recent credits include Australian premieres of Hearth (La Mama), Emilia (Arts Centre Melbourne) and Peacemongers (Darebin Speakeasy). She directed Sweeney Todd and Nora: A Doll’s House for WAAPA's graduating years (2023-24); and the smash-hit Australian premiere of The Lucky Country (Hayes Theatre Co). Her screen pilot The Quest, earned her awards for Best Supporting Actress (Melbourne WebFest) and Best Children’s Film (Wild Indie SciFi/ Fantasy Film Festival, London). www.sonyasuares.com
